Introduction
Introduction
In the last few years, increased cost consciousness in the public and private sectors and technological advances in the field of small onsite sewage treatment plants have lead to a distinctly greater acceptance of decentralized wastewater treatment.
In sparsely populated regions or developing areas, decentralized wastewater treatment in sewage treatment units for single-family dwellings or local or suburban district sewage treatment plants, can be a cost-effective alternative to the sewage system required to convey the effluent to large, centralized sewage treatment plants.
However, decentralized plants must fulfil considerably higher requirements than large sewage treatment plants, since small plants are more affected by the following phenomena than are large ones:
Hydraulic shock loads
A widely fluctuating wastewater inflow with high daily peak values, as well as the low buffer capacity of the plant and the upstream, usually quite short, sewage system, lead to hydraulic shock loads.
Peak loads
Smaller wastewater treatment plants also have to process non-equalized peak loads of pollutants resulting from a variety of wastewater constituents that flow in at different times (wash water - bathroom: COD approx. 50 - 200 mg/l and kitchen wastewater: COD approx. 1,000 to 5,000 mg/l).
Low-load operation
In addition to the peak loads described above, decentralized plants have to cope with low-load, and even no-load, periods (holiday periods, seasonal differences).
In the meantime, the successful operation of numerous small decentralized wastewater treatment plants has shown that, due to the further development of plant technology, reliable and cost-effective treatment of domestic and/or municipal wastewater is possible in these.
