Solar sewage sludge dryer installation in South America close to start-up

The dryer installation in South America

On WWTP Cali in Colombia the local contractor Coningeneria is building the biggest solar sewage sludge dryer on the continent and uses HUBER equipment. It is also the biggest solar sewage sludge dryer ever manufactured by HUBER SE. The project comprises of our parallel treatment lines. The customer is free to decide for each of the lines whether to feed the sludge by conveyor belts or wheel loaders.

HUBER received the first order for three lines in 2009. In 2010, the end customer decided to place the order for another line and meanwhile plans to expand the plant once again. The sun alone will evaporate a water column of more than one and a half metre per year. Nevertheless, the end customer wanted to have a floor heating in order to achieve the maximum dryer efficiency. The feed per day is 10 m³ press sludge per line.

The plant operators plan to use sewage sludge as fertilizer for sugarcane production. The first tests carried out in Colombia with thin sludge as fertilizer for sugarcane showed excellent results. With the HUBER solar sewage sludge dryer the city of Cali is even going a step further: The dried, storable sludge granulate can easily and effectively be used to improve the crop yield.

The plant will soon be undergoing the functional test and the first sludge will be fed and dried still in spring. The city of Cali has chosen the recovery of valuable raw material from wastewater. With our well-engineered and robust machines and plants, we are glad to be available as a reliable partner for them.
